Picasa

A couple of years ago, I gave Picasa 1.5 a glowing review in a glossy computer magazine. Since then, Google acquired the program, endowed it with oodles of new features, and slashed the price from $30 to free.

Picasa 2 helps you organize your digital photos — first, by dumping the pictures from your digital camera into Picasa. From there, you can organize and rate them, do quick and easy touch-ups, and share them in a variety of ways. You can even make picture collages and poster-sized versions of your pix. But, for my money, the organizing features — just being able to find your digital pictures — make it worth another glowing review.

TextWrangler

Programmers and webmasters consider a great text editor to be an essential tool in their arsenal. For Mac users who make web sites, TextWrangler is a fantastic text editor — and unlike its $200 big brother BBEdit, feature-rich TextWrangler costs nuthin'.

TextWrangler's Perl-Compatible Regular Expression tool alone makes it golden. Say you've got a list of 1,000 names in last, first format. TextWrangler's find-and-replace function can instantly turn the entire list into proper firstname lastname format. Or, use the multi-file search to change every occurrence of one word to another across an entire folder. In addition to editing files on your Mac, it can open and save text files located on remote FTP and SFTP servers. It also can find the differences between two text files and do plenty more.

Prevx Home

The fight against computer worms, viruses and Trojan attacks is constant and continuous. Some users, and even some experts, have become so hopeless and desperate about these threats that they consider reverting their PC platforms to Windows 98, just to avoid havoc-wreaking infections. Thankfully, Prevx Home provides a genuine solution against malicious attacks. It starts working not only immediately, but from the day before a virus patch can be developed. Prevx automatically notifies you of new threats via a simple alert system. When you receive an alert, you can decide what to do about it by referring to an alerts database, which lists actions taken by other users in similar situations. If you can't kill the potential threat entirely, you'll at least be able to stay ahead of it and never allow it to affect your computer.

The GIMP

It's tiresome to use a hundred tools to perform a hundred tasks. The GIMP, a powerful all-in-one image editor, enables an ordinary home user to design and work with images as a professional graphic designer might. With this multi-featured tool you can author, compose and retouch images with the simplicity of Windows Paint and the robust functionality of Adobe graphic design applications. GNU allows you to do everything from tweak images to convert image formats to perform online batch processing. Like professional graphic design tools, the GIMP application is extensible via optional feature plug-ins. GIMP works with all file formats and is easy to use overall.

Intrusion detection for your wireless network

AirSnare

Manage your wireless network better with this advanced intrusion detection system.

Gone are the days when you would helplessly curse an intrusion into your wireless network, wishing you could get hold of the guy who dared snoop around your systems. With the AirSnare detection system, you can quickly identify unfriendly systems on your network. First, give the program a list of trusted MAC addresses: the computers, printers, and other wireless devices that are allowed to connect to your network. When AirSnare detects an untrusted device, it can track the IP address and automatically send a message to that computer. If you run an open network, your message might be something to the effect of "enjoy my wireless network, but behave yourself." If you manage to connect to my wireless network, you'll find that its message isn't quite so friendly.

Google Desktop Search

Our lives have not been the same since Google introduced its web search engine. You can find a house to live in, a restaurant to eat at, and a lifetime of knowledge through Google. Google Desktop Search adds the same capability for searching your computer, allowing you to quickly find text within your email messages, online chats, word processor documents and other types of files. The application has a photographic memory of the information on your computer, which is automatically updated whenever new files are added. Searching works exactly like a regular Google search, right from your web browser, and is just as fast. An optional deskbar interface makes accessing it even easier.
