Free language learning tools

Did you ever want to learn a foreign language? There are many ways you can go: sign up at the local Adult School or Community College, buy one of the language instruction programs you see advertised on TV, or even hire a private tutor. It can be a daunting experience—and that's before you even start learning the language itself.

The BBC has free language instruction tools on their website. Focusing primarily on French, German, Spanish, and Italian, they've got online materials to help assess where you are in a given language (did all those years of high school French actually stick with you?) and to get you up to speed quickly. You can work at your own pace, so you can progress as fast as you want, or take the time to let the new material really sink in. Using a combination of instruction and games as teaching tools, they've also got grammar tips and even an online dictionary.

Whether you're brushing up on languages you've already studied, or are setting off on a new linguistic adventure, you just might want to give this a try.

BBC Languages is a free online service and should be compatible with most modern web browsers.
