Disk images—DMG—are a great way to bundle up piles of Mac stuff and keep them safe and secure. Files, folders, whatever—you just stuff them all into a disk image, and go on your merry way. You can store them as archives; you can burn them to optical medial like CDs or DVDs; you can even send them across the 'Net without files and folders losing their Mac-ness. The only way to improve them would be to make them easier to create.

Enter the world of FreeDMG. This tool gives you a nice, clean drag-and-drop way to create disk images. You can choose plain old images, or you can compress the documents and folders that you're sticking in there. You can even encrypt them if you want to. It's so easy to use, you'll end up creating images of everything. Or maybe not.

FreeDMG is a Mac application. It runs under OS X; you'll need to be running version 10.4 or 10.5 to use it.
