For some folks, "punching a time clock" is just a metaphor for the daily grind of work. For others, especially in manufacturing and service industries, it's a real world day-to-day event. If you're the puncher, you generally don't have a lot to say about it. The clock is there, and if you want to get credit for time worked—most often reflected in a paycheck—then you need to punch in and clock out. If you're the business manager or owner, then you are the one who has to worry about the expense of purchasing and maintaining the machinery—the actual timeclock—to say nothing of the timecards that you use to collect your employees' ins and outs. And then there's the whole compiling-the-information part that turns those little cards into paychecks for your employees. It all takes a bunch of time, to say nothing about a bunch of money.

Picture Timeclock is a low-cost alternative that can help you stay on top of your recordkeeping needs for your hourly employees. All you need to run it is an old PC that you can probably pick up at the next swap meet or your neighbor's garage sale. Once you're up and running, it's easy to collect info from your employees, and once it's in the system, you can generate all kinds of reports letting you keep track of who worked when, and for how long. If you like, you can even add a camera to your rig—that's the "picture" part of the application's name—to snap a picture when your folks sign in or out. No need to worry about whether somebody else is messing around with the system.

It's also got a bunch of helpful features. You can collect info on tips collected during a shift. Onscreen messages can be formatted in multiple languages, so if you've got some non-English speaking folk on the payroll they'll be able to understand what's going on.

Picture Timeclock is a free Windows application.
